Corum will be introducing the Golden Bridge Titanium at Baselworld 2009. This unique timepiece features a manufacture movement CO-113, a mechanical baguette movement, hand-wound by a stem at 6 o’clock. It features a slipping spring mechanism and a variable adjustable inertia balance, adjustable by screws. The movement runs at a frequency: of 4Hz or 28′800 vph. The beautiful 18k red gold hand-engraved plates and bridge are visible through any of the four sapphire crystals. One on the front, one on the back and one on each side of the case. The case is tonneau-shaped and is made of titanium, with a nice mixture of polished and satin finished surfaces. It measures 34 mm x 51 mm and features a titanium crown, decorated with a CORUM key. The Golden Bridge displays hours and minutes with black skeleton hands and a very cool no-dial design.

The use of high grade 2 titanium and PVD coating not only offers a great visual contrast to the movement, it also gives great rigidity, as well as a precise surface flatness which is essential for the perfect functioning of the gear train.

The use of DLC and PVD for the case and movement, is a great example of technology being used for both form and function. PVD and DLC adds a very appealing “black” appearance to the watch. And just as importantly, these coatings add to the functionality of the watch. By making the case scratch-resistant and by increasing the rigidity of the movement parts.

The RM005-S Calibre movement runs at 28,800 vph. Case is 48 mm x 39.30 mm x 13.84 mm. The sapphire crystal is 1.20 mm thick and has anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Power reserve is 55 hours. Strap is black rubber. Water-resistance is 100 meters.

The War Veterans Watchmaker Initiative, in conjunction with the American Watch Guild, will be launching The Watchmaker and Technician Training Program for Disabled War Veterans and War Veterans.

With the number of practicing watchmakers at an all-time-low of 4,400, the goal of the program is to help replenish the shortage of watchmakers and watch technicians.

So far, the program has accomplished the following:

* Bob Filotei, national director of the program, is in communication with 11 U.S. horological schools, which will donate scholarships, tools and materials.
* Letters have been sent to horological schools announcing the initiative.
* A Web site is being built that will be the focal point for war veterans, horological schools, manufacturers and retailers.

In addition, watch retailers and service centers will be enlisted to apprentice interested veterans for a 2-4 week period. The veterans will work side-by-side with watch technicians to learn basic skills and will be evaluated on their dexterity, passion and patience. Some of the candidates will go on to enroll in horological schools, and others might remain on site for further technical training.

The War Veterans Watchmaker Initiative also plans to form an alliance with The Fischer House program, which donates “comfort homes” on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers so families can be close to loved ones while they’re receiving treatment.

The organization will also launch a public relations campaign targeting trade publications, news and government organizations.
